The utility of the human behavior course, when considered in light of the second-year psychiatry course, has been debated. It appears, most importantly, to introduce the student to concepts of human communication, elements of counseling, and human development and aging. But do we need a whole semester to read about and discuss these issues? Can the time be used for other things, such as an early start to Bacteriology?

If you respond in the affirmative to the poll, what alternatives can you suggest? If you disagree, what are your thoughts on the matter?

I definitely feel that the human behavior and psychiatry courses were excessively redundant--Though this was helpful in some ways (e.g. the psych section of Step 1), I think that our time in First Year could be better used by other subjects (for example, devoting more emphasis to practicing physical exam techniques in POM).

the courses may be redundant, but when you're wading through second year and psych comes on as class #5 you're awfully glad that it's not all brand new info. perhaps psych could replace human behavior as a first year course; or they could be combined in some way.
