How should students on Hem/Onc service address the issue of evening call?

These students should not be on call. (Shifts call burden to students not on HemOnc week)

They should admit patients and present them to the on-call resident without a write-up. (Status quo)

A Hem/Onc week should not be included as part of the inpatient rotation. (Increases number of students on General Service)

During the inpatient hem/onc week at UVA, students on call are not required to write a full H&P on a General Peds patient they admit, since they will not be followed on the Hem/Onc service.

The question has been raised: should students on Hem/Onc week take evening call, since they regularly admit Hem/Onc patients during off-call days? This would increase the call burden to all students.

How should this issue be addressed?

I think the status quo is best. Not that I like the current system, but I think the other options are too problematic. Eliminating the hem-onc week would put too many students on the general service (already too many students). If hem-onc students didn't take call, the call would be too frequent for the remaining students. I think the best option would be to have hem-onc students not take call and not ask the general patients to take extra call to make up for this.
